GnatMacOSX Installation HOWTO

Break the Windows and breathe free. — Adrian Hoe, 1998.

I encountered a few obstacles in installing Gnat for Mac OS X. Thanks to Jim Hopper for his guide to installing. Lacking installation-HOWTO on the website, I decided to write a short and simple installation-HOWTO.

  1. Download Mac OS X 10.2.3 update. This is optional.
  2. You will need Apple Developer Tools which is not pre-installed. If you already have Apple Developer Tools installed. Skip this and goto Step 3. If not, follow the steps below to install Apple Developer Tools:
    1. Double click the Macintosh HD icon on your Desktop.
    2. Double click Installers folder.
    3. Double click Developer Tools folder.
    4. Double click Developer.mpkg and follow the installation steps.
  3. After you have installed the Apple Developer Tools, download Wavefront 10.2 (gnat-gcc-3.1-1173-jaguar.dmg). Click on its icon on your desktop after download is completed. Follow the installtion steps. After the installation, you should be able to compile your Ada codes using UNIX-like command line. Goto Terminal (/Application/Utilities/Terminal).
  4. To use Apple IDE, Project Builder, download Wavefront of gdb for 10.2 (gnatgdb-225.20020911.sit). After Stuff-It-Expander has expanded the file, you will see gnatgdb-225.20020911 icon on your Desktop. Goto Terminal and do the following:
  5. % cd /usr/bin

    % sudo mv gdb gdb.orig

    % sudo mv ~/Desktop/gnatgdb-225.20020911 gdb

  6. Download the Wavefront Carbon Bindings for Mac OS X 10.2 (Carbon_Bindings_10.2_Dec.sit). After the download, you should be able to see Carbon_Bindings_10_2#1434BC.pkg icon on your Desktop. Double click it and follow the installation steps.
  7. Double click Macintosh HD then Developer folder then Applications folder. Double cick Project Builder. Viola!
