That shows a vast differences at local and foreign universities.

It's easy to differentiate yourself from the others if you have the determination to do so. They may see you as an alien or "monster". Your friends may not know you anymore. But what the heck? You are not in the university for them. So, ignore their gossip etc.

In my university, people are competing for front seat. It is an honor to be in front seat. People will have to wait outside the lecture hall before the session starts. No one will be late except special cases.

Don't let this negative attitude stand in your way of knowledge. Get rid of them. Sit in front and ask questions. If a silly question that may clear your doubt, go ahead and ask. Let your peers laugh on you. You are learning and when your knowledge surpass theirs, you can walk tall. You will come to a stage when you feel confident and you will find yourself higher level than your peers.

They do that because they simply do not know what is the purpose of education. This is very common scenario in Malaysia.

Just curious, did the audience avoid sitting in the front? Or avoided eye contact with you during Q&A session?

Why do I ask so is because this phenomenon is very common in MMU. Today I saw something funny in the campus. There is a huge banner hang beside a path for encouraging students to sit in front during lecture!

(Slogan translated as: "Please sit in front during lecture in order to gain the benefit of learning."

What a pity, I feel like I'm studying in a primary school. And shamefully, I was actually one of these people who are so afraid to have a close distance with the lecturer/speaker. Now I wonder why.
