The happiest day in 2008
Perhaps, today is my happiest day in 2008. The accomplishment of the past few days has been astonishing and satisfactory. Although there has been ups and downs and some scums are trying to make my days miserable, they have not succeeded. So, make my day, scum heads. I am very optimistic about 2008 and the new Rat year.
GPS data uploaded
Finally, I have had the time to upload the GPS data I collected from yesterday’s delivery. The data is now all in the Windows box. It is too late to remove some unwanted data (data from other trips e.g. Zakimi on Okinawa and etc.). So I just make another copy of all the data and probably will edit them during this CNY.
I am kind of thirsty for more GPS data from delivery or trips to alien places. Anymore delivery? It is kinda fun. It is like treasure hunting, or tracking down a location. It is really exciting and fun!
Shopping for CNY
This morning I took everyone to Jusco for some browsing. I seldom buy new clothing for CNY simply because I don’t find the clothing around this time is cheap and of good quality and nice. We went there for the sake of browsing hopefully could pick up some interesting items. We did not find anything interesting for the kids. By this weekend and next week, all shopping malls will be jam-packed with people. I hate to navigate through crowds and queuing up to pay.
6th anniversary
Tomorrow will be the 6th anniversary for AdrianHoe.com. Time really flies. On the last day of 2007, my site has reached 1,000,000 visitors. 6 years for 1 million visitors. It is not really high hits. But, since I made my site to a blog since May 2006, my site has received more hits in 2007. I believe 2008 will draw more traffics to my site with my own SEO and tags analysis.
Dinos are down with flu
Oh dear! Three dinos are down with flu again. CNY is just around the corner. This is what LA and I fear about. I took them to the clinic nearby to get some flu medicine then took them for a spin at downtown. In the car while waiting for the light to turn green, I taught Richie the word “downtown” and “uptown”.
We went to the town to see some CNY decoration. The decoration is not as beautiful as 20 years ago. Partly the reason is lack of sponsorship. Shops are not willing to sponsor as the local government does not care to participate in the CNY decoration.
I hope I will have some time this weekend to go downtown for photo shooting. I always wanted to do it but did not find time for it. I hope this year I can find some time for it.
GPS Guided Delivery
Delivery all done! A dozen hampers at 4 locations in Selangor/Kuala Lumpur. 3 out of 4 locations were alien places to me because I had never been there. Drop #1 in Sungai Long, Drop #2 was in Sungai Besi, Drop #3 in PJ and Drop #4 in Selayang. 1, 2 and 4 were places I was not familiar with and had never been there.
I arrived at Kajang toll at 1130 hours and started to use my GPS device to guide me. Found the place easily by following the GPS guidance. It took some times to navigate through some messy traffics and finding the block and the unit. But I managed to drop off and proceed to Drop #2 at 1215 hours.
Drop #2 and #4 needed some communication with the clients as their address were without street name. They used lot number as they were in industrial park. That complicated the process a little. By 1507 hours, all goods delivered.
On the night before, I researched on the GPS map and found Drop #1 and marked it. Easy job. I had to defer Drop #2 and #4 until morning so that I could call up the clients for some direction. I called them this morning and could roughly know the locations and marked them.
What made this mission interesting was an ironic demarcation which a traditional delivery versus technology-assisted delivery. While heading to Sungai Long after exiting Kajang toll, I saw a cab driver with a full load of hampers in his cab. He was on a hamper delivery mission too. The difference was that he was looking at his hand drawn map on the steering wheel. In great contrast, I was guided by GPS.
The mission had helped me to build a Clientele GIS.
Orders All Done!
We received an order of 11 hampers from KL last Saturday. After 3 days of sleepless night, finally we had all the orders done up and ready for delivery tomorrow. LA, especially, has 3 sleepless nights. She did not sleep at all last night. I just done helping her to get the last two hampers up so that she can wrap them up in the afternoon and go to bed early tonight. I will go to bed early tonight. It will be a busy and hard day tomorrow to delivery to various locations around KL. I will be traveling alone tomorrow as the car will be a load full of hampers.

Family Delivery Team
We all went to Subang Jaya to deliver hampers order yesterday. Our plan was to go to 1U for shopping after the delivery. But the car AC and the front brake were giving problem. When we arrived at Subang Jaya, the AC began to blow hot air instead of nice cool air. After the delivery, the AC wasn’t functioning properly yet and the front brake started making some noises. According to my driving experience, I decided to take the car in for a examination by my brother-in-law’s friend. His workshop was in Damansara Utama.
It was a long way from USJ1 to DU and the roads were quite jam packed. When we finally arrived at the workshop, poor R and N were sweating. They had rosy cheeks and sweat wet shirts! What a mobile sauna.
I changed the brake pad mid last year and it was finished in less than a year. So much of the Honda’s spare parts quality!
And the AC, the magnetic clutch of the compressor became faulty and needed to be replaced. The repair would take about 2 hours so we took 3 dinos to Starbucks to cool down with ice blended drinks while waiting for my sister-in-law’s husband to come to take them to her house.
The car was ready around 6PM and I went to my SIL’s house to meet them. We proceeded to 1U in the evening for a quick shopping. LA did not find any shoes she likes. We went to FCUK and nothing eye catching except the price tags. We had dinner at 1U and hang around until almost 10:30PM.
We arrived home around 1AM. When we arrived, we suddenly realized we forgot to attend our neighbor’s grandchild full moon party. The next morning, our neighbor came to our house to deliver some cakes and red eggs and we apologized to her for not attending. What a day!
Tiger
Previously, I wrote an article about a story of keeping tiger. Tiger is among the big ferocious cats I like. The tiger’s face is the main attraction, especially its captivating eyes.
Due to its beautiful fur, tiger has become an endangered species. Poachers hunt tigers for their beautiful fur. In some places, development activities have invaded tigers’ natural habitat forcing tigers to hunt for food near human settlement. Not all tigers hunt human. Most man hunters are old tigers which can no longer hunt like a young tiger and turn their hunting target to human. Many species have already extinct, like, the Javanese and Balinese tigers.
Free Web Polls
Alright. You need to get an idea what your visitors think of an issue. You need a web poll which is easy to setup and most importantly it is free and does not take up additional disk space or database. There is a free web poll which provides myspace polls. It takes less than 2 minutes to sign up and get your poll up and running. Everything is stored and calculated on their server. Everything they offer is completely free and no pop-up advertisement or banners.
I am a buddhist
I am a buddhist. And my family are buddhists. Although I regard buddhism as a philosophy and education system, my family and I are true buddhists. The beauty of buddhism is that it is a peaceful religion and away from politics.
I am very comfortable with the buddhism I am following now and there is no need to change my religion. And I will never change to other religion.

All foot wears are stitched together making them breathable, durable, repairable and recyclable. Po-Zu shoes are organic shoes. And the shoe cream is edible!
Sun announces agreement to acquire MySQL
On January 16, 2008 Sun entered a definitive agreement to acquire MySQL, developer of the world largest Open Source database. The move reaffirms Sun as a leading provider of hardware and software platforms for the web economy.
The news is really exciting and as expected. Sun has been involved in open source development and released great products like Solaris 10, OpenOffice and now MySQL is going to be under Sun’s flagship. With the involvement of Sun in MySQL development and the funding, Sun will be able to leverage MySQL further from its current position.
More exciting news and features from MySQL and Sun will be expected to breakout very soon.

Goods sold are not returnable
Do you know your rights as a consumer? Read on. Benji sent me this information yesterday. I think it is good to share this information to exercise consumers’ rights to shape a better community.
Legal Issue on Contract Law in Malaysia - Good for us to know
Do you notice that most of the time, the receipt / invoice you received from the merchant carries this exclusion clause or similarly worded statement: “Goods sold are not returnable” or “No refund once sold”.
Please remember that : “As long as your goods is purchased for home use and not for business ( i.e. to be resold), the above exclusion clause is void.
That means, as long as the good is defective, regardless of what is worded, you can get back all your money spent . You do not have to accept a repair on the good or an exchange. You can ask for a refund. And you are legally right and entitled to!
And most of the time the merchant will refuse to return you your money.
You may threaten the merchant with four words: “See you in court!”
The court here refers to the Small Claims Tribunal Court. Any goods which is worth RM25,000 and below can apply to this Court.
However, you don’t have to tell them what court! All you have to pay is RM10 admin fee and the loser (the merchant) will have to refund you the money plus the admin fee!
I have seen that most educated people are cowed by such unfair wordings (which includes a few of my friends).
Please try not to let the merchant fleece you the next time you have defective goods.
You can file this On the 16th floor of Putra Place (The Mall opposite Putra World Trade Centre) . The form cost RM5.00 . The Tribunal will settle within 2 months period.

A tiring day
Whew! After about two months of not coaching at schools, it is certainly tiring to coach two classes. Tonight, one student took the grading test. He missed the December grading and he missed last week test too. I thought more would come for the test as some little tigers from Jasin missed their test last week. Only one student turned up for grading.
Not too tiring giving grading test though. But it was really weary to correct his mistakes. I think I will go to bed early tonight. I don’t feel like carry on with some of my work.
First day at school
Today is the first training day at school after the long year-end school holidays. All schools re-opened on January 3 but co-curriculum activities only begin this week. Many old members dropped out already. Today has 90+ students came to enroll themselves into the school karate club. What a big crowd! But again, they are interim. According to my teaching experience in school, by the next two weeks, the number will drop drastically to less than half. By another 2 to 3 weeks, the number will reduce half again. It’s fine for me and it is a healthy sign as the the filtering process will filter out casual members. I hope to spot one or two (or maybe a few) potential butterflies like Ong.
The process of registering their name with the school karate club committee was quite a mess as this was the first time for these 14-year-old teenagers to handle such a big crowd. Off course, I helped out by showing them what to do. At least I was able to train the other old members. Unlike last year, I alone handled more than 100+ head counts.
Haircut United!
Last evening, I went for my hair cut at a Malay stall at Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho. I have had my haircut there for a couple of times. Yesterday, I met a long loss family friend there. He is the pakcik who gave me haircut when I was a little boy at the age of Dmitry. His barber shop was at the MARA shops at the riverside not far away from my dad’s place. My dad used to take me there for haircuts. I can remember I was crying during the haircut until primary school. I had my haircut there until mid secondary school. After that, like all other teens, I had my haircut at fashion salons.
His shop has been pulverized for tourist spot development three years ago. Before it was demolished, I met him there a few times a couple years ago and I brought Dmitry there for a haircut once. I didn’t know his whereabout after the demolition.
It was fated to meet him again last evening. I somehow felt something was going to happen yesterday morning. It was really nice to meet him again. He was working there as a partner with his ex-employee/partner. So, he gave me a handsome haircut and we made a picture together. Hope to see him again the next trip.
After the haircut, I went home happily, washed my hair, took a quick shower and a quick snack then out I went to doukoukai for my training.

IP Flooding
I am experiencing IP flooding on my router. It notifies me by email about this attack. Right now, I have identified the source and hopefully I can nail this attacker soon. This is not the first time I experience IP flooding. I have received quite many email notifications in the past 3 weeks but I was out. It is coincident that I am still at my computers solving some server problems.
SVN setup
I’ve finally found time to setup svn at my home net after so many months. My svn server was down when my previous Linux box was down with a dead hard disk last year. The setup was quite a brisk. I had everything installed and configured last night. The test for remote access using a url was successful. I could import, checkout and check in. Because it was already late, about 1AM, I felt rather tire and went to bed.
This morning, I hacked some codes to provide a rather informative post commit email notification. All are done except the check in will stall. It takes a long time (and possibly hang!). I have yet to fully test before I begin my development project again.
Is your connection secured?
Internet has become a common tool to connect your mobile computer back to the computers in your office while you are on the go. When you are out there negotiating business with your client, you need to extract a file from your computer in your office but you are hundred or maybe thousands miles away, how can you retrieve your file?
The answer is by using FTP or File Transfer Protocol. You can make connection from your mobile computer to your office computer via an Internet connection. It is very convenient to use. But there is a security concern. All communications between your mobile and office computers can be read like an open book by anyone lurking in the Internet. You need a secured way to transfer your sensitive business data.
Pragma Systems SFTP client provides you a secured FTP connection by encrypting all data before they leave your computers. You can be rest assured of the confidentiality of your data during transmission. Don’t leave your office without it. You never know who is watching.
Tiger
I love tiger. It is so beautiful, especially the head. Tiger is the largest of the four big cats in the panthera genus. Tiger is native in the southern and eastern Asia. It is an apex predator and an obligate carnivore. I like to watch tiger in actions. Their movement is so light, stealthy but powerful.
Many years ago, there was a family at Sinn Hoe Garden, Bukit Baru keeping some tigers in their house compound. It was a hot topic and main attraction in this housing estate as well as in the town. Many people flocked to that house to see some tigers running loose in the house compound.
I was no exemption and joined the crowds. The house owner appeared to be the parent of a St David’s students. He was my junior and he knew me. So, I got the chance to be invited into their home and had a close encounter with their tigers. There were a few young cubs too. They were very playful. Their fur was so nice to touch.
Later, a news broke out. The owner was attacked by one of the tiger. Instantly, the news spread and haunted everyone especially people living at the estate. Soon, under social pressure, the owner had to give up his tigers and sent them to the zoo.
See Cher at Caesar’s Palace
Cher is going to perform at Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas this May. Have you got your Cher Tickets at Caesars Palace? Cher joins the exclusive list of stars like Celine Dion and Elton John to perform at Caesar’s Palace. Cher is a Grammy award winner who found fame in 1965 as half of the pop duo Sonny & Cher.
I was introduced to Cher with her first album, All I Really Want To Do (1966) by my friend. Then I was caught by her album, Bittersweet Love Songs (1973). In this album, my favorite songs are By Myself, Am I Blue, What’ll I Do, Long and Winding Road and He’ll Never Know. Among other of her albums I like are I’d Rather Believe In You (1976), Cherished (1977), Black Rose (1980) and Cher (1987).
At that time I was still schooling and had no money to buy audio playback equipment not to mention her records or cassettes. Those records belonged to my friend’s father. After my high school graduation in 1988, my friend and I parted ways and I had no chance to goto his home to listen to her music. I did not buy any of her album until the release of her last album, Living Proof in 2002. That’s her only CD I have in my possession. I like it very much. Her music is very vibrant. Her vocal is clear and crisp. The picture above was Cher during Living Proof: The Farewell Tour. Here is the list of her tracks in Living Proof:
- Song for the Lonely
- A Different Kind of Love Song
- Alive Again
- The Music’s No Good Without You
- Rain, Rain
- Real Love
- Love So High
- Body to Body, Heart to Heart
- Love Is A Lonely Place Without You
- Love One Another
- When You Walk Away
- When The Money’s Gone
You can visit Cher.com to sample her album. Last night, I listened to her album and I felt alive again!
How to get black belt fast? - Part 2
I wrote an article with the same title some time ago. You can find it here. There are a number of inquiries asking me how to get black belt fast. Well, I told them: “The fastest way is go to the store, buy one and wear it!” That’s the fastest way and cheapest way of becoming a “Black Belt”.
Two weeks ago, a Chinese family came to my doukoukai to inquire. Came along their two elder sons and the youngest daughter. They asked a lot of questions about our training and they watched my students practicing on their own.
Before leaving, the father asked me what dan am I? Because we don’t wear gi and belt during training, I jokingly told him I didn’t have any belt. They never return. That’s fine for me.
Many parents, including their children, are eager to reach black belt. They don’t understand the principal of training as well as the ranking system. Last night, 5 little tigers from my Jasin class turned up for the grading. These little kids do not pay attention during training and certainly do not train at home. I failed 3 of them in front of their parents to teach these little kids a lesson about failure. To my surprise, the parents were very keen at taking notes for their children. Although the students themselves are supposed to take notes after the training, it shows some positive feedback from the parents. The parents also get to know how their children are doing in training classes. Anyway, I am glad to have supportive parents like them. The 3 kids will re-test after 3 months. They are not required to pay any fee for a re-test.
Why Kanbun Sensei leaving China so soon?
My research effort about Uechi-Ryu has been gaining some momentum and one interesting fact I found out together with my students about Kanbun Sensei is that, why Kanbun Sensei left China so soon?
The research has sparkled from an unrecorded fact which was told by mouth. We gathered quite some materials which indicated some speculations and deviation from what I already knew of. Kanbun Sensei might have more than one teacher while he was in Fuzhou.
I have established many theories why Kanbun Sensei left China in a hurry. But this information cannot be published at this moment because it can affect the family honor of the Uechi’s descendants as well as shaking the Uechi-Ryu community. All these can come down with a simple question, why Kanbun Sensei left China?
My research is gaining more interesting facts and I am planning to go deeper into it.
Product Seminars
This morning I attended the Panasonic IP Camera Seminar at Panasonic Malaysia in Shah Alam. The drive was smooth but I was lost in Shah Alam trying to locate the place. I did not bring along my GPS but I managed to get to USJ11 where I was a little more familiar with. I took the long way by getting to the Federal Highway, paid the toll and found Panasonic Malaysia at last.
The seminar was organized by Panasonic and its distributor. Not so much of interesting talk. Organization was a little messy but overall good. Speakers were not very well trained and lack of exposure. The entire presentation was not too bad at all and it wasn’t boring as there were some people asking interesting questions. Most important of all was that I managed to establish contacts with Panasonic Malaysia.
Panasonic treated its guest very well with a nice buffet lunch. I took the lunch, washed down with dessert and drinks. Talked to my vendor and to establish closer relationship.
Then I had to rush to Hilton PJ to attend another IP camera event. It was a dealers gathering organized by Axis Communication and one of its distributor in Malaysia. The event was organized in Uncle’s Chili, a restaurant pub. Nice setup and cozy environment. The presentation was presented by Axis Singapore. The presentation was absolutely good and informative. Axis is a Swedish company and its IP cameras are world number 1.
Axis presentation had been very entertaining and educating at the same time. The presenter, Nafis Jasmani, had done a great job.
Axis and its distributor treated their guests very well too. Excellent and delicious food. I had a great “meal” with a beer together with some people I met there. Dessert was great too! The only thing I disliked was that people began to puff cigarette after food and beer. The smoke immediately destroyed the cozy environment and the nice cool air.
I spoke to Nafis before I left. We talked about Axis Developer Program and some technical details. As I understood from him, there are 4 developers in Malaysia developing some vertical Axis solutions. Quite an interesting fact.
Eagle cries
In my previous poem, I wrote “千里莺啼绿映红”
The loose translation is “Eagle cries thousand miles away and green (white) reflects red (black)”.
A deeper understanding of this sentence and the loosely translated English version needs to be understood from the Chinese literature perspective, not by using stupid translation software. The original meaning describes a beautiful scenery. But when this sentence is used in my poem, coupled with the other sentences, it becomes another meaning. The real translation with a deeper understanding is this:
An eagle cries as in “it involves in a quarrel which it defends against an accusation”. The green means white and also means correctness and right. But other people sees it as red (black) and means something so wrong.
So, the green (绿) and red (红), as reflected in a Chinese proverb: “青红皂白”. The green-red (青红) pairs into (皂白), black-white. Both green-red and black-white make vivid contrast as wrong-right makes its contrast! The Chinese use these 2 contrasts to describe right and wrong, good and bad.
In the translation, the green means white, has the meaning of innocent. The Chinese characters for green-white is “青白”. And the character green “青” (qing) is pronounced similarly as “清” (qing) or meaning clear. So, “青白” is “清白”, which means innocent.
Similarly, the character “映” means to reflect, according to dictionary. Here, in the context of the poem, it means to contrast. That’s the magic of Chinese literature.
It is a character game which the meanings of a word can be interchangeable. It cannot be translated without proper understanding.
As I said earlier about that sentence “千里莺啼绿映红” in my poem, its original meaning differs from meaning as reflected in my poem when coupled with other sentences or words. A translation software cannot cleverly determine and analyze the structure of the sentence(s) as well as the relationship between the previous and the next sentences. But a clever human being with a “proper” understanding of Chinese literature can. So, don’t use the stupid translation software to determine wrong and right!
A tiny fraction of people knows who and what I am referring to.
