What a stupid Digi service

December 28th, 2006 at 18:35 · Filed Under Call Me a Geek, Critiques, Hacking

I registered my mom’s Digi prepaid number at Digi’s Melaka Raya office using my MyKad. The man slotted my MyKad to a reader and after a while he confirmed that my line had been registered. Today, when I was trying to make a call from my mom’s Digi number, it said that no outgoing call was allowed. I checked the validity and it expires on 12/31. There are 3 more days before the validity expires. I am going to Digi office tomorrow to make hell lot of noise, for sure.

The prepaid registration drive is really hectic and stupid. The government thinks that it can deter unlawful use but I don’t think so. There are many other ways to obtain a prepaid cell phone numbers without needing to register with true identity. Like in Taiwan, prepaid cell phones need to be registered but they still have lots of problems with “ghost” cell phones. I was able to register one for myself without much fuss. An advanced country like Taiwan can’t even solve the problem and our country is thinking that it can. What a childish assumption! That makes the whole thing looks so stupid.

Another thing which I have observed is that personal information are revealed when someone register a prepaid cell service using MyKad at dealers. The dealers are equipped with MyKad reader and software to read personal details from MyKad and these information including address will be displayed on the computer screen. Women please beware of this. You may be tracked. Perpetrator may use these information to hunt you down. So, everyone, please beware when you are registering your prepaid cell service at dealers. Make sure they don’t copy your personal information. Your information displayed in the window can be easily copied by pressing ALT + Print Scrn. This will capture the current window instantly.
They think it is cool to register using MyKad and IT gadgets but that opens up a whole new opportunity for crimes. Please beware and make the government to change its policy that no one can read and display personal details without the presence of MyKad holder and these reader and software must be properly audited by trusted organization to make sure it does not save these information stealthily.

MyKad is personal identification for government purposes only and should not be used indiscriminately for any non-governmental transactions. Identity theft can result in bank accounts being wiped out, or someone overcharging your credit resulting in bad credit for the victim.

I would protest vehemently if I was asked to disclose such personal and confidential information. In this age of computerization where personal data information can travel globally, who knows what elements out there would assume your identity. I know of people who will not use credit cards and only do all transactions with cash only for the very reason that they do not want personal information transferred anywhere. So do be careful.

Yes, I do agree with you Adrian !! Personal informatoin should not be disclosed to others unless you are enforcement unit. However, I do not recognize this type of reader in the store because I was a foreigner staying in Malaysia for work (reporter from Thailand). Maybe I can report this in Thailand news.

May I know what this reader looks like ???? (A picture will be helpful for understanding (send to my email))

u must be a psycho to think about ppl stealing information this way.
they ask for your MyKad for identification ofcourse.
think about ppl asking your Driver’s License when you test drive a car, IC when applying for postpaid mobile phones, omg u’re such a lunatic. this thing does not only apply to DiGi, it’s the same for Maxis and Celcom

I think you are the lunatic and your comprehension is really bad. Where in my post did I say this only applied to Digi? I was talking about Digi on separate matter. And I was talking about personal confidential data could be easily copied digitally.

When you test drive a car, you have to let the car dealer to record and make a photocopy of your driver license and IC. Yes, that’s no doubt about it. No one is allowed to retain anyone’s driver license and IC except law enforcement unit. If your driver license and IC is retained by your car dealer when you test drive a car, perhaps your intelligence is not as good. And you should also marked your photocopy for the purpose so that they can’t be used for any other purpose.

In my post, I was talking about people stealthily copied digital confidential details of other people and that could be sold or used by some perpetrator. I was also trying to alert, especially ladies, to be aware of this situation. Why do you call me psycho and lunatic?

I think you are psychotic because you dare not use your real name to post your comment.

Are you from Melaka? Your IP address indicates an origin from Melaka. I hope I am wrong. Am I a lunatic?

There is another flaw in malaysia’s grand plan for e-gov : the beloved mykid card. Last nite I tried the mycard reader service on the astro decoder box. My wife’s and my mycard read out ok, but when I tried my son’s mykid card, it says that the card is not recognized. Either the card was faulty or the smarty-pants at JPN forgot to upload my son’s particulars onto it……. (which is more likely!) Either way it beats the intentions of having e-gov. Anyway… I’m a bit paranoid when it comes to Big Brother trying to monitor our private lives.

    Mao Mao,

Here’s the picture of a MyKad reader from Maxis. I finally got a chance to go to my friend’s shop to snap a photo.

That’s why i shifted to Maxis, it’s now turn to Celcom sets up fire to Digi!

I agree. Digi is not playing fair. I hate to call Digi numbers. If the Digi number is not answering, it will charge 24 cents for unanswered call unless I hang up the call before the machine answers.

I keep a Digi service to call Digi numbers which is cheaper.
