PC is dead!

My Linux power workstation cum server is dead. It’s motherboard problem. The motherboard is Albatron’s KX-18D Pro II socket 462. It sported an AMD Athlon XP 3000+, 1GB RAM, 120GB SATA hard disk, 256MB Video Graphics.

It was one of the fastest PC 2 years ago. Now, it is ancient. It is hard to find a replacement motherboard that supports Athlon XP 3000+.

Perhaps, I should get a dual G5 PowerMac. But it is very expensive.

Apple G5 will be a good choice if the pocket is deep. Two P4 PCs in a local university literally burnt up when they were used to process DNA sequence. At the end, G5 proves to complete the ardent task.

The Apple PowerMac G5 is the good choice because it has the PowerPC CPU. With Apple’s Intel roadmap, I doubt it will be as good as PowerPC although Intel has significant speed advantage over PPC.

I prefer AMD over Intel because AMD has lower power consumption and therefore cooler.

Most universities in the west will choose either AMD or PPC. Don’t know why local universities are so incline to Intel.

But I feel that local universities make their choice without looking into technical merits. Just like they would choose Java instead of Ada.
